Auckland - 7 & 8 March - Conference set to increase Maori potential in forestry
From:
Iris Pahau
Date:
Jan 31 09:34 NZDT
From: Iris Pahau <email obscured>] Sent: Tuesday, 31 January 2012 8:32 a.m. To: 'Media Alerts' Subject: Conference set to increase Maori potential in forestry The Futures Forestry Finance Conference has been touted as the most important event of the year for Maori in forestry. "The opportunity for Maori trustees to learn from international forestry market experts and to get alongside senior managers from other forest producers and financiers only comes around once every two years, " says FIEA director John Stulen. The Forestry Industry Engineering Association has specifically focused on accommodating for Maori authorities and businesses to connect with key industry leaders at their upcoming conference in March from the 7th to 8th at the Crowne Plaza in Auckland. "We've had excellent feedback from trustees attending previous conferences in this series. So we've responded by adding more sessions of direct relevance to increasing Maori participation in forest management and the business outcomes as a result. Aside from hearing the speeches, trustees can gain a lot from the networking with these senior managers in the business." Jacob Kajavala (Ngati Ruapani, Tuhoe, Ngati Kahungunu), one of the keynote speakers, says the conference couldn't have come at a better time given the imminent possibilities for Maori to capitalize on the industry's growth. Jacob says their participation is key to NZ's forestry future. "The values we hold as Maori make us ideal partners to the NZ forest industry. The long term view of our people and our land is perfectly aligned with the long term nature of forest investment." The current climate supports the need for Maori forestry networks to connect with key players. Statistics show that whilst Maori own an increasing portion of forestry lands, there is a real need to address the lack of interest in forestry production and management. "The gap that is yet to be effectively addressed is one of clear, cohesive & courageous direction. We have all the skills from frontline operations through to strategic, financial and business leadership. Our challenge is to create a crisp, nimble and focused body that will direct and unify our strategies." Being Pkeh can be an ethnic and cultural identity, as well as an understanding in a Treaty context. As a word with a history, Pkeh was used in the Declaration of Independence 1835 and te Tiriti o Waitangi in 1840, and as a word, could be said to have gone into disrepute as a result of the process of colonisation, and breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi. Adopting the name Pkeh can be a signal of belonging here and not somewhere else, and also as being a commitment. Rather than framed in the negative as non-Mori, Pkeh is framed in the positive. If we wish to build cultural competence, including to be able to have robust conversations about New Zealands future, it is useful to understand where we are. This also serves as good opportunity for reflection in the week before Waitangi Day- Monday 6th February. Do we see diversity as a positive value? What is the first language spoken in our homes? Do we value te reo Mori? How does the 'we' vary by age, gender, ethnicity and geography in New Zealand? These questions and more will be explored in this session with a presentation from Kate Terry, Director Client Services Media NZ and Anca Cernic from the Nielsen Company. The cultural perspectives available through Nielsens Consumer and Media Insights database represent five years of data from face to face interviews with a diverse range of New Zealanders. The nature of the database means the different responses can be distinguished, explored and discussed by age, gender, ethnicity, geography (and a myriad of other variables). When: 6-7:30pm Thursday 2nd February Where: Whare wananga, Level 2, Central City Library, 44-46 Lorne St, Auckland CBD (For a google map, click here) The session will be introduced by Carl Chenery- sustainability strategist and Citizen of Auckland. Carl is a Pkeh New Zealander of English, Irish, Scottish and French descent. Hosted in association with the Treaty Resource Centre, and the Tmaki Treaty Workers. In attending, participants will be asked to consider what steps they would like to take themselves in the year ahead.
