The issue of suicide in New Zealand has recently been prominent in the media. The question has been talking more openly about suicide as a society. This is an important debate, and a first step in acknowledging the problem. The sad fact is that more people die by suicide than are killed on our roads each year. Between 10 and 15 people each week complete suicide; as many as 10 times that figure engage in risky behaviours which can result in hospitalisation. Also present behind these statistics are the whanau, friends and colleagues affected by the traumatic loss of a loved one, co-worker or buddy. Suicide is a problem occurring in our communities every day. Okay, but what can we do? Lifeline Aotearoa works in suicide prevention education, and presents the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) workshop on a monthly basis in the greater Auckland region. ASIST is a practical workshop teaching participants to recognise suicide signs, intervene and support with confidence, and link those at risk to appropriate support services. The aim of the two-day workshop is to help you become more ready, willing and able to respond safely and effectively to someone you hold concern for. ASIST represents a community response to a community problem. As an on-going support for yourself and your organisation, ASIST graduates are eligible for the half-day refresher course, called Tune-Up. Usually run 6 months to a year following the main course, it is a great way to reconnect with the material and with other caregivers/kaiawhina in the area. We have one course left at the pre GST rise price of $360 per person. The date is September 23 & 24, to be held in Greenlane. Places are limited and we don't want you to miss out so be in quick! Early registration is essential. Wanted:
Koreans with reasonably good English willing to help their fellow Koreans on
how to job search in New Zealand.
At the last Waitakere Well Being Summit, it was raised that there should be
a bi-lingual job search workshop for Koreans.
Migrant Action Trust is unable to run a bi-lingual workshop unfortunately.
We however recognised the need hence, our best offer is to train Korean
facilitators with reasonably good English who can then run it bi-lingually
to their own people.
Interested??
Please come to this session:
in Migrant Action Trust
161 Stoddard Road, Mt Roskill
on 11 and 18 Sept, from 10 am to 2 pm.
We recommend you attend both sessions.
No cost to join, just bring a plate for lunch.

Tuesday 7 September WAKE UP WAITAKERE- AGAIN Community Waitakere has issued another call to action for Waitakere residents, this time to vote in the upcoming local elections, a postal vote that opens September 17 and closes October 9. Community Waitakere co-led a major campaign against the government's 'Super City' reforms, under the banner of the Community Coalition for Auckland: Voices of Tamaki Makaurau (CC4A) supported by about 70 other community organisations. "We had over 1000 people in the streets of Henderson within days of the government's hijack of the Royal Commission's report on Regional Governance," said Tony Mayow, Community Waitakere Chair and Coalition spokesperson. "Our catch cry was Wake up Waitakere," said Mr Mayow, "and we ran a vociferous campaign to defend the gains we've made here against the horrendous model put forward under the influence of the Act Party." "We didn't succeed in stopping it, that was never possible, but the enormous upsurge of community outrage did make a huge difference to the ultimate model, and the opportunity now exists to strengthen and consolidate the Eco City in the larger region, rather than lose it all." 'Now we say it again: Wake up Waitakere! Don't leave it to chance and let somebody else make the decisions for us. Get out there and exercise your vote for the candidates you really want, those who will preserve the Waitakere Way, and make sure it becomes the way the new city works." "Only our own apathy will let us down now, there are plenty of quality positive candidates standing. Think through what they stand for, and regardless of who you vote for, exercise your civic right and your pride in Waitakere. Stand up and be counted by voting." Community Waitakere has already held a meeting with one of the two leading mayoral candidates, Manukau Mayor Len Brown, and will be meeting separately with Auckland Mayor John Banks in the near future, to discuss the issues of Waitakere's communities in depth. Community Waitakere will release assessments of those discussions to help inform voters both publicly and on their website www.communitywaitakere.org.nz <http://www.communitywaitakere.org.nz/> . "We will do our best to keep voters informed, but then it's entirely over to the community, in this make or break election,' says Mr Mayow, "As they say, use it or lose it!" Carl Davidson Chief Commissioner, Families Commission invites you to a panel discussion and forum on the principles, value and practices of kaupapa Māori research in the State Sector To be held at Pipitea Marae 55 Thorndon Quay, Wellington Wednesday 15 September 2010 Pōwhiri at 4.30pm The korero will focus on the context of kaupapa Māori research, its importance and relevance to Māori, to research generally, and its value as an influence on the development of policy and service delivery, especially as it impacts upon whānau. Te Kōmihana ā Whānau will also use this forum to release its new kaupapa Māori research report Whānau Taketake Māori: Recessions and Māori Resilience This paper brings together strong quantitative evidence, interwoven with a compelling qualitative narrative, which tells of the resilience that comes from the strength of whānau, hapū and iwi. It shows that supporting whānau to achieve a strong base of assets and resources – cultural, social, economic and environmental – in turn supports Māori, individually and collectively, to resist and survive the worst impacts of recession. Our panelists are · Dr Charlotte Severne (Māori Development and Oceans Manager, NIWA) · Dr Fiona Cram (Director, Katoa Ltd – Kaupapa Māori Research) · Sir Edward Durie (Retired Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court and · Former Chair, Waitangi Tribunal) · Dr Wiremu Doherty (Te Wānanga O Te Awanuiārangi) RSVP by 13 September Penny Dring-Aust <email obscured>> <email obscured> 04 917 7055 AIO ki te Aorangi ...
